Olympia rules

How athletes are judged and how they currently qualify for the Olympia in Open, Classic, 212 and Men's Physique.

How judging works

Panel and scoring

A panel of judges ranks the athletes by placing. Each athlete's highest and lowest placings are dropped and the rest are added up: the lowest total wins. Ties are broken using all judges' placings.

Prejudging

This is where most of the contest is decided: quarter turns (front, sides and back), mandatory poses and side-by-side comparisons called by the head judge.

Finals

In Open, 212 and Classic, finalists perform an individual posing routine followed by the posedown. The final result combines the rounds.

How athletes are scored

1. Each judge ranks the athletes

Judges don't give 0–10 marks: each one ranks the athletes in order (1st, 2nd, 3rd…). That placing is the athlete's "score" from that judge.

2. Highest and lowest are dropped

For each athlete, the best and worst placings received are thrown out. This limits the effect of a judge who disagrees with the rest of the panel.

3. Sum: lowest total wins

The remaining placings are added up. The lower the total, the better: an athlete ranked 1st by nearly every judge gets the lowest sum and wins.

How to read the final scorecard

What the scorecard shows

The official scorecard lists each athlete's number, name, country, the placing given by each judge, the sum for each round, the total and the final place.

Real example: 2026 Classic Olympia

Niall Darwen won with 7 points, against 10 for Mike Sommerfeld and 14 for Ramon Dino. The 7 points show Darwen was placed 1st by most of the judges whose scores counted.

Ties and athletes outside the top 15

Ties are broken using every placing, including the dropped ones. Athletes who miss the final usually appear tied at the same place (for example, "16th").

What judges look for in each division
Open
Maximum muscle with symmetry, proportion, conditioning (definition and density) and presentation. No weight limit.
212
Same criteria as Open for athletes weighing up to 212 lb (96.2 kg) at the official weigh-in.
Classic Physique
Golden-era aesthetic physique: small waist, lines and proportion. Maximum weight depends on height; classic poses and the vacuum reward aesthetics.
Men's Physique
Board-short athletes judged on front and back stances, quarter turns and the walk: V-taper, shoulders, waist, abs, conditioning and stage presence. No flexing poses.
Current qualification system (2027 season)

The 2027 Olympia qualification period runs from August 31, 2026 to September 12, 2027. There are two different systems:

Open · 212

  • Top 3 from the previous Olympia qualify automatically.
  • Winning any pro show in the division during the period earns a spot ("win and you're in").
  • No points system.

Classic Physique · Men's Physique

  • Top 3 from the previous Olympia qualify automatically.
  • Winning a Tier 1 event earns a spot.
  • At other pro shows, athletes need two wins for an automatic spot.
  • The top 20 in the points standings also qualify (it was 25 in 2026).

Former Olympia champions have lifetime eligibility, but it is not automatic: after more than five years without a title, IFBB Pro League approval is required.
